Communicate YOURSELF!
For the self/group video there were four themes; they included separation, politics, abstract and communication. Within separation the group has to “show something that denotes alienation or separation.” Within politics the group has to “show something that denotes or represents political believes; this can show something that is not a ‘political party’ based, but more of a political dynamic. This can be the politics of being a college student, of socializing in the job market etc. Within the abstract group, the group has to “show something that deviates from reality and is somewhat surreal in nature.” Within communication the group has to visually communicate a form of communication.” For the group assignment communication was assigned to Shylande, Jessica, Alexis and Zack.
As a group we chose to portray story, taking inspiration from the stages of grief to communicate how many students feel when they have assignments due; titling the assignment due date. The stages represented were denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. Each member was assigned a specific expression and as a collaborative all partook in acceptance.
For denial the objective was to show how many college students know they have work and assignments due, but continue to procrastinate and act as though they don’t. The clips for denial show a students calendar filled with quiz dates, assignment dates, and test dates behind a pile of books and papers. As time goes on the student continues to cross off the days on the calendar but instead of the pile getting smaller, it continues to grow with no progress being done. The video of denial also showcases the student watching Dave Chappelle's skits, completely ignoring the work as it continues to grow and also sleeping. The beginning and the end of the clips showcase many similarities; coming to do the work but then going against the process. In the beginning of the denial clip the student is walking towards the school building, before deciding to turn around and go the other way. The ending clips showcases the student walking towards the pile of books, assignments, and papers but the deciding to cut the lights and leave the room to go on about her day.
The shooting of this assignment went very smoothly. As a group it was planned ahead of time of what needed to be shot and how to go about shooting it. The video needed to be shoot to convey the message but also understood without words; it needed to clearly showcase communication whether through time, exaggeration in acting, etc. Deciding to come up with a plan as a group saved a lot of time and set the group up to easily get straight to what was needed to record for each separate category. When editing this assignment, it can be a little tricky if one may have no iMovie experience; thankfully iMovie is a great program for beginners to familiarize themselves with. Editing included a lot of slicing of clips, moving around clips, speeding up moments, and condensing clips for the sake of time. One thing the group had to make sure of was going over the checklist. Each member has to ensure their video had at least two filters in each section including a distance and close up shot. Posting the videos were not much of a task as well, being familiar with how YouTube and Vimeo works allowed for the students to easily make the upload.
Many people process information differently, a good way to learn is through visual learning and the same goes for communications, being able to communicate visually is essential. The way the communications group created their video was to speak without words. It is common today that many people have low attention span and generally gravitate toward screens.
Using video captures the eyes of the viewers and continues to hold her interest by comparison to writing and photographs. Video clips that are engaging and encourage the viewers to figure out what is going on, will hold a viewer for a longer time then writing because as a generation we are attached to screens. The public nature of the group video for the communications group did not affect the subject matter and public nature of the video; it actually helped in the end during the acceptance portion of the video. For the self-portrait video the class was constructed to create a video that showcase how well you can visually communicate something about yourself. The video was required to be one minute in time with 15 seconds dedicated to credits, then finally condensing it into a 15 second trailer/teaser as well. The criteria for the self video was to be a metaphorical or figurative representation of yourself. The subject must record themselves and the other subjects. Music must be used during the video for at least 10 seconds; and a tight close up and another shot that showcases distance with at least two filters in the clip.
For the self-portrait video vision was to construct it based on a setting, the ideal setting for this was a college dorm room. The self portrait video showcased art paintings of Frida Kahlo and paintings from Haiti or from Haitian artist, included in the video also showcase crystals such as amethyst and rose quartz, pins with the label of Black Active Minds, an organization on Buffalo State campus, as well as mugs and other posters that showcase the Beatles and photography. The self-portrait video ends with the subject in front of the camera showcasing her talent by drawing a fashion sketch. What is being communicated in the video is, everything that surrounds the subject influences her to be a creator as well, while also showing all the things that she likes.
In conclusion this assignment was an ideal assignment to focus on visual communication. For the group video it was a necessity to communicate a theme, and the self-portrait video was to communicate yourself. Uploading the videos to YouTube and Vimeo did not cause a lot of problems, outside of the copyright for music. To make sure the video was not affected it had to be noted that the music used is not yours. This assignment also was an ideal way for a beginner to familiarize themselves with iMovie. Within this project students focused on conveying a message, editing, and understanding the Gestalt.
